A few days ago EA revealed that they had shipped 10 million copies (http://bf3blog.com/2011/10/battlefield-3-ships-10-million-copies/) of Battlefield 3, but as we know, “shipped” doesn’t mean “sold”, and many wondered how many of those copies were sold. Well now EA has revealed just how many they’ve sold: 5 million. That’s including the 3 million pre-orders (http://bf3blog.com/2011/10/battlefield-3-launches-with-3-million-pre-orders/) of the game. EA didn’t break down how many copies were sold on the individual systems.


Battlefield 3 launched exactly one week ago in the United States, and while gamers saw some issues with game servers, most of the server issues have been resolved by now. EA also announced that the Battlefield franchise to date spans 17 titles that have sold a combined total of 50 million units.

Or, and here's a thought, maybe those same console kiddies that bought MW2 and BO in their millions don't feel the same about BF3 because it is an entirely different game style? BF has always been more tactical than COD, and it just doesn't have the same appeal to pubbers as COD does.

Now, put down pubbers as much as you want (and most PC players have this strange disdain for them), but they are by far the largest game buying demographic, which means that more than 2 thirds of those who bought BF3 will be pubbers. Put the arguments together and you have this:

if 5 million sales of BF3 is supposed to mean anything, and the majority of those 5 million are pubbers, then if you put down pubbers, you end up undermining your own argument - you end up effectively saying that 2 thirds of those who bought BF3 don't know what a good game is if it hit them square in the face.

On the other hand, if pubbers opinions mean anything, the statistics are telling us that the majority of players prefer COD game style over BF3. That is, that there is something inherently appealing about COD which cant be found in the BF franchise, new fancy graphics engine or not.
