Looking Ahead

By H Brun - Feb 03, 2011, 12:00AM

There comes a time when we as a studio have to choose where to best put our efforts. At DICE we’re dedicated to taking care of our products after launch, and also hell bent on building new, innovative and high quality games.

In my day to day work, I look at our release schedule and the studio’s capacity, weighing them against our wild ambitions to create awesomeness. I often need to make hard calls regarding where we put the studio’s focus. Part of the challenge is to balance work on the new against the already shipped, prioritizing the amount of energy spent on the known franchises and the time spent on developing something entirely new.

This is one of those cross roads where I need to make a hard decision. While we’ll continue supporting Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and previous games, it’s time to look ahead to the next giant leap for DICE – the release of Battlefield 3, powered by the mighty Frostbite 2 engine. Our goal is crystal clear: we’re going to build the best Battlefield game ever, and we’ll do whatever it takes to make this the biggest launch in DICE’s history.

We know some of you eagerly have been awaiting Battlefield 1943 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Onslaught on PC. I’m sad to say that these two titles are now officially cancelled. Instead, our talented teams will focus on delivering the greatest possible gaming experience in our next behemoth release. We’re confident this will lead to an even better experience in Battlefield 3, not only on PC, but on all platforms.

For an idea of what that means, watch this space for some exciting news I think you’ll like.

Best regards,
Karl Magnus Troedsson
General Manager, DICE

When BF1943 was first announced I looked forward to it as out of all the BF game 1942 was my favourite and I still play it from time to time. Onslaught, never interested me personally.

If BF3 is going to be "the best Battlefield game ever" then I wont mind about 1943 being cancelled so much. My expectations of BF3 however are it not coming close to being the best BF ever.....

I am expecting bugs and no mod tools.

What I see is going to happen.

BF3 = Consolized to the max.

Small ass maps, 32 player cap ( not confirmed ), no mod/map tools, nadda.

BF3 will have to "exceed" BF2 and I do not see that happening with what Dice called

"powered by the mighty Frostbite 2 engine"

Good luck Dice, your new BF3 better exceed BF2 is "ALL ASPECTS" if you want a winner. This means to NOT remove what we have in BF2. No jacking player counts lower, no jacking map sizes to smaller ones, no jacking the game down period. Give us what we have already and build on that, then and only then you can have a winner.

What I am saying is do not take things away period.

Its a wait and see and come after he speaks I will post what I feel. I however do not expect to hear any good news about BF3.

It will be thumbed down, crippled and stripped of things that we had 5 - 10 years ago. Again lets see what Dice has to say about BF3.

Armed with a new engine, DICE sets its sights on Call of Duty

That made me laugh - setting their sights on Call of Duty. What, you mean like they did with MOH 2010? Lol and where did that get them? Bottom of the bargin bin in less than 4 months.

The new "awesomeness" of the Frostbite 2.0 engine: destruction; more destruction; and improved eye candy. Never mind about the crashes to desktop, never mind about the bad hit detection, never mind about the crappy server browser and general crappy user interface, lets give them more eye candy and destruction. That will sell BF3. NOT!

Never going to happen, the way it made money for them was amazing.

The amount GSPS handed over to EA each month was massive

Instead of looking ahead, they need to look behind then and see the mistakes that they have made and learn from them. Correct what didn't work first then more forward is my thinking.

A leaked EA ad for Battlefield 3 has emerged, giving away details about a planned Limited Edition.

The LE will include a 'Back To Karkland' map pack, which features revamped content from Battlefield 2.

http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/screenshot_245934.jpg

The ad reveals: "This themed expansion pack features four legendary maps from Battlefield 2 boldly re-imagined with frostbite 2 physics, destruction and visuals.

"Completing the package are classic Battlefield 2 weapons and vehicles, unique rewards, new Achievements/Trophies and more."

The ad explains that the map pack will be available for those who pre-order the special edition - but will be available for purchase as DLC at a later date for buyers of the regular game.

EA revealed this week that Battlefield 3 will be released in the autumn (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/287142/news/battlefield-3-trailer-reveals-autumn-release-date/), via the first trailer for the game.

Subsequent retail listings leaked a whole load more information about the game, including the fact it will feature battles in Paris, Tehran and New York. (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/287196/news/battlefield-3-takes-you-to-paris-tehran-and-new-york/)

Battlefield 3 won’t include Commander feature

On February 8th, 2011 in News

Going through our latest issue of GameInformer, the question of Commander came up (the Commander feature was available on Battlefield 2, and gave a player command over his team). Here’s what we found in GameInformer:

http://bf3blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/bf3soldier.jpgQ: When I think about Battlefield 2, I always come back to the Commander position and the game within the game that arose from having Special Forces objectives. Are those returning in the proper sequel?

A: We could implement it, but the questions is “how do you get the threshold lower?” That’s not by making it more complicated. Our challenge is to make sure that anyone that just jumps into the game will get it. One of the biggest problems with Commander was that only two people could use it. Some people like it but most people didn’t care. They just cared that someone gave them an order or that their squad could play together having fun on their own more or less. Then the most hardcore people went into the Commander mode and learned how to use that. You could argue it was a great feature, but looking at the number you could also say that no one uses it. We tried in Bad Company 2 to give that t players, so you could issue orders to your squad, and you could use gadgets like the UAV that only the commander could use earlier — giving the power back to the players so everyone could use it. That made a big difference. More people could enjoy the game. We lowered the threshold for everyone because we gave it to everyone. We now know the boundaries are for keeping the strategic depth and complexity while lowering the threshold to get in.

The argument that only two players could be commander (each on his team) is valid, but that was the whole point: a commander would lead his team. The notion that the UAV in Bad Company 2 was more accessible is nonsense — there was only one UAV in Bad Company 2. So only one player could use it, as opposed to two commanders in BF2.

If you ask us, this is a textbook example of “dumbing things down”, what DICE calls “make the threshold lower” and we can’t help but feel disappointed that the Commander feature isn’t returning to Battlefield 3. It added a whole new level to the gameplay, which will now be missing in BF3.

Battlefield 3 GameInformer info + screenshots

On February 8th, 2011 in Gallery, News

http://bf3blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/bf3screenshot4.jpg

http://bf3blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/bf3screenshot1-200x120.jpg http://bf3blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/bf3screenshot2-200x120.jpg http://bf3blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/bf3screenshot4-200x120.jpg

The new GameInformer issue is out and folks have already provided scans of the article, which include plenty of great-looking screenshots. Furthermore, these details were obtained from the article:

Aiming for Fall 2011 release
4 classes
Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together
Frostbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written
Lighting sounds neat, one “probe” contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.
Level destruction is going to be “believable” but basically everything is destructible.
Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.
AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
No more “gliding” animations that look off, animation realism is a focus
Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
Plan on better, more immediate post release content
More unlocks than Bad Company 2
Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having “pink rabbit hat(s)”
Will have co-op
There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off
BF3′s team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.
Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah (Iraqi Kurdistan).
Will be M rated
PC version is lead version
No mod tools at release

All of this sounds pretty good to us, but we can’t help but feel a bit disappointed at having only 4 classes.
